Jhpiego pronounced ja-pie-go is an international non-profit health organization affiliated with Johns Hopkins University. For 35 years Jhpiego has empowered front-line health workers by designing and implementing effective low-cost hands-on solutions to strengthen the delivery of health care services for women and their families. By putting evidence-based health innovations into everyday practice Jhpiego works to break down barriers to high-quality health care for the worlds most vulnerable populations.Health Services Support ProjectWorking with sub-partners including Save the Children and Futures Group International Jhpiego is currently implementing the five-year Health Services Support Project HSSP which focuses on improving the delivery of high-quality health care services in 364 health facilities across 13 provinces in Afghanistan. A key strategy for improvement of service quality has been the Quality Assurance Process. In an effort to increase the number of skilled attendants Jhpiego has also been working to strengthen the quality of midwifery education and to provide grants to community and hospital midwifery schools. The project also aims to increase the capacity of the MoPH to design and implement effective behavior change communication programs and increase community involvement in the protection and promotion of health. Finally HSSP works to integrate gender-sensitive practices into health service delivery through culturally appropriate methods such as training supportive supervision and creation of an enabling policy environment.
